At the Heart of Fukushima

During business trip to Japan in November 2016, Vice-Minister of Energy of RK Bakhytzhan Dzhaksaliyev and Director General of RSE NNC RK Erlan Batyrbekov visited Fukushima-1nuclear power plant. 

“The first impression was feeling as if nothing happened in 2011, so rapidly Japanese specialists renovated the territory of nuclear power plant after the earthquake” – commented Erlan Batyrbekov.

In December 2013, NPP was officially shut down. The operations on accident consequences liquidation are being continued.

Major support in liquidation of accident consequences at NPP for Japanese specialists were study results performed jointly with Kazakhstani specialists at the unique research base of the National Nuclear Center of RK.

Joint project is entitled by the same name – Fukushima (Marubeni, Japan). The objective of operations was modelling and following study of solidified fragments of Fukushima-1 NPP rector core as well as developing of recommendations on mechanisms structure for removal of actual solidified fragments.

The project was finalized in March 2016 after successfully performed large-scale and small-scale experiments. Considering the importance of data obtained, Japanese side considers the opportunity for further continuation of cooperation on this project. All these issues were discussed during the visit at Fukushima-1 NPP.

It is remarkable that in building of Fukushima-1 NPP, Japanese specialists have put on a map of the world with marking of countries (cities) specialists of which visited NPP after the accident. Kazakhstani delegation marked three cities at once: Astana, Almaty and Kurchatov.
